UL Lafayette Petroleum Engineering students visited Workstrings International and Stabil Drill on Friday, September 12, for an industry facility tour showcasing drilling equipment, manufacturing, and quality systems used in modern operations.

The visit began at Workstrings International, where students toured the facility and learned about complete drilling assemblies and bottomhole assembly components, including drill pipe (DP), heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP), drill collars (DCs), handling equipment, float equipment, inspection processes, and precision machining.

Students then traveled to Workstrings’ sister company, Stabil Drill, to explore stabilizers, hole openers, non-magnetic drill collars, and additional drilling tools and machining operations. With the global headquarters for both companies located in Lafayette, the tour provided a valuable opportunity for students to see world-class drilling technology and operations in our region.

This field experience followed recent classroom discussions on downhole drilling tools and reinforced how course concepts translate directly to real-world applications. Facility tours like this help close the gap between academic preparation and industry practice by giving students direct exposure to equipment, QA/QC workflows, and the people behind the tools used on rigs around the world.

UL Lafayette Petroleum Engineering thanks Workstrings International and Stabil Drill for hosting our students and supporting experiential learning.
