On Friday, February 28, UL Lafayette Petroleum Engineering students had the unique opportunity to visit Coastal Drilling Rig 21, which is currently in port for scheduled maintenance. This impressive rig boasts a 3,000 HP power rating, a 2-million-pound hookload capacity, and is designed to drill to depths of up to 35,000 feet using 5 1/2” drill pipe.

The 21 students in attendance were able to see firsthand the drilling equipment they study in the classroom, gaining valuable insight into the why and how of each step in the drilling process. This experience helped bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world industry operations.

We extend our sincere thanks to Coastal Drilling for providing this outstanding opportunity for our students to engage with industry professionals and deepen their understanding of drilling operations.
