Mission Statement
Educational Objectives
MISSION STATEMENT
To educate a diverse population of students to become petroleum engineers to perform applied research that benefits petroleum exploration and production, and to provide service to the industry and public. The mechanism for achieving this mission is through a strong foundation to prepare students for international careers, continued education, public service and lifelong learning. The program emphasizes applied and multi-disciplinary teamwork in instruction and in research.
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : Broad education, based on:
UL Lafayette and Regents` core curriculum emphasizing general education.
Effective communication skills.
Skills that promote a diverse and global professional career.
Understanding of the need and ability to participate in lifelong learning.
Objective 2 : Strong Foundation in engineering principles and practices, based on:
Course coverage of fundamentals of engineering topics.

Significant students` participation in relevant engineering interactions.
Qualified petroleum engineering faculty with diverse experience.
Objective 3 : Applied problem solving skills, as demonstrated by:
Designing and conducting experiments.
Analyzing and interpreting data.
Problem solving skills in engineering practice.
Completing practical/industrial problems and projects.
Objective 4: An understanding of ethical, social, and health, safety, and environmental issues and professional responsibilities, as demonstrated by:
Knowledge and appreciation of the codes of ethics of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
Awareness and appreciation for health, safety and environmental issues.
Integrating ethical, social, health, safety, and environmental issues into practical/industrial problems and projects.
Objective 5:
Multi-Disciplinary team skills, as demonstrated by:
Functioning with peers from other disciplines during classes and student activities.
Integrating information and data from multiple sources.
Functioning as an intern in the industry, and participating in technical seminars, field trips, and industrial/professional functions and events.
